The Consumer Reports in February 2009 published the report on the best buys in the microwave space. Many categories of microwaves were evaluated ranging from mid-sized counter tops to over the range microwaves.

They tested 60 models and based on:

Mid-Sized Counter top microwave ovens

These are smaller sized microwaves and hence occupy less space on the counter. However they cannot handle larger vessels and greater capacity.
