Even when we’re talking about large well-known companies such as GE things can still go wrong with their products, whether if it’s an error on the production line that was repeated several thousands of times till it was discovered or it’s using shoddy components.
This was the reason behind a major GE microwave recall relatively recently when they recalled around ninety-two thousand units of a special combination microwave-conventional wall oven, produced from January 1st of 2000 to December 31st of 2003, due to a fire hazard.
Apparently the door switch of the microwave oven was prone to overheating and there were cases in which it ignited the plastic parts around it; this lead to several incidents of minor property damage and one case in which the fire started by the microwave damaged the surrounding kitchen cabinets. Not all the microwave combo ovens were recalled only some of them with certain serial numbers, but even so they were recalled years after they were sold in the first place.
This recall affects combo oven models under several brand names such as: GE, GE Profile with white, black, bisque and stainless steel models being affected.

Now if you happen to be the owner of one of these models what can you do in order to ensure that your model is safe?
Well first of all you can call General Electric Customer Service at (888) 240-2745 in order to arrange a free service call because GE is offering to repair your model for free.
If however you don’t want to repair your current model and wish to replace it with a new one then GE is offering a three hundred dollar rebate for consumers who wish to do that. They offer a six hundred dollar rebate if instead of replacing it with a standard unit you wish to replace your combo with a model from the GE Profile brand.
In order to gain access to any of these rebates all you have to do is to download the rebate form from their website or to call the General Electric Customer Service from 8AM to 6 PM from Monday through Friday Eastern Time.
Also, in order to qualify for the rebate you need to include all the following pieces of information in the rebate application:
However let’s assume that you either like your present microwave oven combo or you don’t want to replace it with a new one, how are they going to repair it?
Well the GE service technicians have been trained to repair the particular problem unit by replacing the potentially defective latch switch assembly with a brand new set of redesigned parts which will better suit the microwave.
It is also worth mentioning that this repair won’t affect the traditional oven since that one is on a completely different circuit and the operation of the microwave door switch is unrelated.
This means that even if you choose not to use your microwave until the technician comes to service it, you can still use the conventional oven as well as any clock and/or timed functions.
GE wants to respond to their consumers as fast as possible so they will usually respond to a consumer with a qualified micro-oven combo within five working days once they get a chance to view your recall application, however this might not happen for a couple of weeks from your initial mail or phone-call.
The good news is that the recall is open indefinitely and also that you won’t purchase a defective model because these models are four to seven years old as well as the fact that any dealers that might still have them in their inventory are advised to not sell them.
