On 5th December 2007, GE announced that it would be recalling all the units of GE, GE Profile and Kenmore microwaves due to a fire threat associated with the unit.

This defect is supposedly found only in the Built-In Combination Wall and Microwave Ovens that were sold between January 2000 and December 2003.

The Problem

The problem with the units was the door switch. It has been observed that the door switch can overheat while the microwave is functioning and this can potentially cause fires.

GE had advised all customers to stop using the unit with immediate effect due to safety concerns. Overall it is estimated that GE had recalled 92000 faulty units.

The real problem is mainly with the combo unit. The lower oven functionality is still safe and could be used without any risk.

The Compensation

As compensation, GE and Sears were offering free repairs.

Alternately, GE offered attractive discounts on purchase of other microwaves under GE or GE Profile brands. Sears sweetened the deal for Kenmore buyers too by replicating the same offer for those defective microwaves.

Claiming the Compensation

The first thing to note is the brand of your GE microwave. The brand names are typically found on the bottom left corner of the unit on the front side.

Check if it is one of the brands mentioned above. The next check is to look at the model. As noted, the defect is only in the Built-In Combination Wall and Microwave Ovens.

If you have any other model under these brand names, you are still fine.

If you do believe that you have a faulty microwave oven, get in touch with Sears directly at 888-679-0282 or www.sears.com to claim the compensation.
