Maytag MMV1164 - A Product Review

The Maytag microwave MMV1164 is more than adequate to the needs of an average family with a capacity of more than 1.6 cubic feet, and backed by a thousand Watts of power.

Positive aspects:

Well, like most ovens in it's class, it has ten levels of power, and a flush and hidden venting system that is elegant and works reasonably well.

There is a vast variety of settings, and once you master them you can get exactly the results you need when cooking a vast variety of dishes.

There are also a lot of hidden extras with this product, one of them being a special filter that captures excess grease, as well as a charcoal filter to remove charcoal odors and even steam.

I liked the hidden vent system, and the fact that the convection system provides for such even cooking. Then there's the sensitivity of the controls and the sensors – I mean, you can melt butter with this microwave, and you can't get much more subtle than that.

Another really nice thing about this microwave is the amount of cooking space it provides you with – the interior is not only spacious, but also lit very efficiently, allowing you to clearly see the food as it cooks, and ensuring that you can take the food out of the oven just as soon as it's done.

Negative aspects:

I'd say that just about the only negative aspect of this device is the display and control panel, which can be rather confusing and difficult to read.

It doesn't help that the instruction booklet leaves a lot to be desired. That said, with a little help from the instrutions, you can still figure out the workings of the device with a little experimentations, by trial and error, and once you figure out the various functions, this is a really nice oven to use.

The fan is good, but could be slightly better. On the other hand, it runs very silently.
A considerable range of cooking options – soften, defrost, auto-reheat, cooking by weight, directly cooking frozen foods. You name it, this oven has it.
The design also ensures that food is cooked evenly and well.
Grease and charcoal filters limit mess and smoke.
There's even a control lockout to prevent the device being used unintentionally, ensuring that the microwave is not damaged by being run empty.

Maytag MMV1164 is a perfectly good microwave if you're looking for an oven for a small family, and will not fail you even if you go in for some gourmet cooking.

Mastering it might take some time because of insufficient documentation, but it's only the documentation that's insufficient – the device itself is wonderfully well designed and will handle just about anything that you throw at it.

This is a highly recommended device for the small family, and one that should give you dedicated service for a long time to come.
