The price of microwave oven usually depends on brand, type of microwave, and what microwave technology does the unit used. First let's look on each type of microwave oven.
Microwaves come in three type – countertop, over-the-range and built-in. The built-in microwaves are a high end model which requires a special installation
The most generic forms are the countertop and the over-the-range microwaves. Let’s study each of these microwaves to understand their functionality as well as the performance parameters.
Free of installation and availability in all sizes are the major strengths of this model. Usually its capacity between 0.5 to 2.2 cu ft. There is only 1 microwave which has a 0.5 cu ft and that's the sharp half pint microwave
Usually a Compact microwaves are available at below 0.7 cu ft and with cooking power below 1000 watts. Their price depends on its capacity and power but mostly below $100 for non popular brands. But for popular brands such as Sharp or Panasonic and with additional technology, the price can go up to $200.
Please bear in mind the smaller the watt for a microwave, it will take longer time to cook. So a 800 watt microwave will take longer times rather than the 1100 watts microwave on the same food with the same weight regardless whatever technology they have.
To save some space in the kitchen, a countertop model comes with an additional feature of installation under a cabinet with an optional hanging –kit or as built-ins with an optional trim kit but at a price ranging $100 to $150.
This is also famously called as microhoods. A professional installation process is required at an additional cost. As the name speaks, these microwaves design to be mounted over the range and come with a vent. The function of the vents is to remove heat away from the oven.
With the price ranging from $200 to $1200, the models with capacities ranging from 1.1 to 2.2 cubic feet. with width around 30 inch wide space
Customers prefer countertop models over the over the range only because of their simple installation.
Although you can find n number of latest developments in the microwave technology, the best feature till date is the inclusion of the cooking sensors - an ability of microwave to detect the food and determine its cooking time to prevent overcooked. This feature works very well in most microwave. Although there are some complaint about overheating.
Another latest microwave technology is inverter technology - a microwave technology which can cook continously at certain power and will result a more even cooking than a standard microwave. This feature happens is not very important one. If your chosen microwave doesn't have this feature, it still can work equally good as most of the microwave which does include this feature.
Convection mode workd by circulating hot air throughout the oven which helps in browning of the foods and more even cooking. Microwave with convection technology can bake, grill and roast. This additional feature adds to the cost of the microwave about $100 to $200, so if your purpose of buy is only to reheat food then look for a cost effective standard microwave.
Latest addition is steaming food to help the food retain its moisture and enable the heat penetrate into it. This is done by adding water to a reservoir as it will self evaporating. However, not much of microwave have this kind of features. Since it is the latest addition, you can only sees them in high end microwave.
