Gone are the days when having a microwave in the house was something special. In the fast paced world, a quick cooking tool like microwave finds a prefect place in most people’s lives.
Now the “in” thing is not the microwave itself, but the additional functionality it can support. The first in the trend were specially designed devices that fit into the microwave cavity and at the same time cook a particular dish or food stuff really well.
But even that’s been surpassed by the new models coming out in the market. The present trend is to include multiple functionality into the microwave.
The new microwave models that are coming out are not just devices that heat food faster, they are also being designed to cook wide varieties of food.
The foremost among them are the microwave toaster ovens. The toaster ovens serve the dual purpose of an oven and the regular microwave. Among these the Sharp Warm and Toasty Microwave-Toaster Oven R-55 has been quite a popular model.
The R-55 is unique in that it uses the same microwave cavity for multiple functions. You can place the turn table and microwave as usual. You can also get rid of the turn table and use it like an oven.
It has many automatic pre-settings that can be used to cook as well as bake wide range of dishes. Besides, actual baking, you can also use it for special reheating purposes like re-heating pizza, melting cheese on bread, etc. If these are performed on regular microwaves, the sweating leaves the bread very soggy.
The compact size makes it a perfect fit for urban dwellings which the counter space is generally limited. However, on the flip side, with the reduced size, even the power is reduced. The R-55 oven has 650W of power. Compare this with standard high power microwaves at around 1000W - 1300W, you are looking at a significantly low powered microwave.
The real effect of the low power comes when you want to use it to heat or thaw frozen dinner quickly. You need to get used to waiting a lot longer to get your hot dinner ready than with your regular microwave.

Size
The compact size is a big plus for this model. It helps save a lot of space in the kitchen.
Oven Functionality
The oven functionality is another boost. It can bake small stuff like biscuits, muffins etc.
Bread Heating
The oven functionality means that you can melt cheese over bread or re-heat pizza without any sweating
Automatic Baking Settings
The pre-set baking settings make it easier to use this for baking foods.
Low Wattage
The low wattage is a big let down in this model. If you are used to a 1000W+ microwave, you may be tearing your head apart by the time this finishes heating.
Toasting Problems
Many users have found that the toasting does not happen uniformly in this oven. That can be a bit of a concern for the perfectionists.
The R-55 is a great choice for those who are looking for a regular microwave with some baking capabilities.
Those who don’t want to start baking loafs of bread at home but may want to make muffins and biscuits, this is a great appliance. The only real drawback is slower cooking times. So if you have some patience, this is a great microwave to look at.
