Microwave Pressure Cooker - Handy Gourment

The Handy Gourmet Microwave Pressure Cooker is less of a pressure cooker and more of a microwave crockpot. Just like the crockpot, you need to brown the meat first and then thicken the liquid after (to make gravy).

It doesn’t come with directions and has no website to consult, but after experimenting a while I have found some great recipes I love to make in it. And of course it makes rice super fast and easy!

Microwave crock pot

I'll start by stating that I think this an absolutely fabulous cooker, and I know you already here the 'but' coming so here it is.

I think pressure cooker may be a bit of a misnomer. It is actually more like a marvelous microwave crock pot that cooks in half the time of the conventional ones. That being said let me tell you about my experience with it and why I still think it's a great buy.

The first thing I did was to try to prepare the recipes that came with it. This did not turn out so well.

I am the kind of person that refuses to let an appliance or piece of equipment get the better of me. So I kept experimenting with the thing.

Trying first one thing and then another until it dawned on me that I was trying to use it like a regular pressure cooker which it certainly isn't. that is when an idea hit me.

I put all my favorite fixings for beef stew in it then set out to determine how long it would take to cook it in the microwave. I started it at 5 minute intervals and low and behold it only took 20minutes to get the meat tender and the veggies done to perfection.

Now I did brown the meat first on the stove but then again it was not all that time consuming of a job either.

So in all it only took me maybe a total of 30 minutes to get a wonderful beef stew. The clean up was nominal and I have since used it for all of my crock pot recipes.

I really think they should rename it the "25 minute microwave crock pot" this way people will not be surprised when they get it home.

A final bit of advice is that you use a lower power level.

I have two and one is a small wattage, 950, this is the one it works best in. I give the Handy Gourmet all of 4-1/2 stars. I took off a bit for having to figure the thing out myself.

I am thinking of writing the company and sending them a manual on how to properly use their invention.

So if you want to have a from scratch meal in less than half the time this is the device that will do it.

The pros do outweigh the cons and don't get frustrated by the bogus manufacturers cooking times. Have a little fun with it and see what you come up with on your own.

I would recommend this pot to any cook who has an adventurous spirit.
