The magnetron, being the heart and nucleus of a microwave oven can be compared to a radio transmitter that is responsible for producing RF energy and sends out waves into the cavity and then absorbed by the food that is being cooked.
Indeed, the microwave oven is one of the dangerous and involves a high risk when worked on. It is then important to consider some important safety precautions for your personal safety.
To determine whether the magnetron of your microwave oven had been damaged, below are the two resistance tests.
Take note that before performing these tests, just make sure that your microwave oven is unplugged and the capacitor had been discharged.
Determine the location of your magnetron.
Remove the leads carefully from the terminals of the magnetron.
Proper wiring is necessary and for traceability purposes, label each wires for you to know later where the wires are attached into.
You will need a measuring device called an ohmmeter.
Set it to the scale of lowest resistance.
Measure the resistance between the terminals of the magnetron by touching the probes to each of the terminals.
Afterwards, reverse the probes and measure again the resistance. Both of the measurements should have the reading of less than one ohm.
Set the ohmmeter to the scale of the highest resistance.
Touch one of the magnetron’s terminals by one of the probes and the other probe must be touched with magnetron’s metal housing.
Be careful not to touch the two probes in contact for it can result to an inaccurate measurement reading. This test must have the result of infinity reading to indicate an open circuit. A slight value in the measurement could also mean a defective magnetron.
