Quick Microwave Recipes

Microwaves have traditionally been looked at as a means to warm your food quickly. The most commonly used functions in any microwave even today are Frozen Dinner, Reheat and Keep Warm.

It has less to do with the microwave itself and more to do with the psychology of the user. We haven’t been thinking of then versatility of the unit, enough. If it can reheat your dinner in a matter of minutes, imagine how much time it can save you in cooking.

Even if you are using it just for reheating, most of us don’t do it efficiently. Here are some tips that will help you use microwave for shorter periods of time:

Baking potatoes and squashes: Pre-cooking the potatoes or squashes in the microwave oven for around 5 minutes can help you save over 20 minutes in your electric oven when you are roasting them
Frozen Meat: Roasting frozen meat requires that it is thawed to about room temperature before placing it in the oven. Now you can wait hours with the meat sitting on your counter or thaw it in minutes using your microwave oven – the choice is yours.

Now microwaves do not necessarily need to be just aids in helping you reduce cooking time using traditional appliances.

They can be you complete cooking aids too. For many that are used to the slow cooking styles in stoves and ovens, the rapid cooking in microwave can be overwhelming. This can become a deterrent for people to try this out. To ease you into using microwave for cooking, and not just reheating, here are some quick microwave recipes to start with.

Microwave Baked Potatoes

Baked potatoes are probably the simplest things to make in your microwave. Here are the steps:

Wash your potatoes thoroughly.
Pierce them deep with fork, you can also slit them in various places with a knife.
Ensure that they are still moist after the wash and cover them with paper towel.
Now cook them in your microwave at high power.
Once the microwave stops, leave the potatoes inside for five minutes. This is when the residual heat in the microwave will cook the inner parts of the potato properly. Else the outer portion will be cooked and inner will still remain hard.

The cooking time depends on the size of the potato, power of the microwave and the number of potatoes. A single medium sized potato would take around 5 minutes on a high power (1000W+) microwave.

Microwave Corn on the Cob

This is another popular recipe that you can try at home with microwave - Corn on the cob. Here are the steps:

Remove the outer leaves from the cob, but retain the husk.
Wrap this husky corn with paper towel
Cooking in high power microwave for 90 -120 seconds.
After allowing it to cool a bit, get rid of the entire husk and clean the corn.
Apply some lime or lemon juice and sprinkle some salt and pepper.

If you are not comfortable clean the corn after its cooked, you can clean and wash it water thoroughly first. Then you have to pat dry the corn and wrap it with paper towel and cook. You should get the same results.

Thus you can see that using microwave to whip out great tasting snacks or side dishes is not that difficult. With some innovation and creativity from your side you can make great meals in your microwave.
