How to fix Sharp Microwave Display?

Sharp microwaves have a multi purpose display and it can be quite useful. Most commonly, the problem you will see is the display not turning on.

Here are the things that you need to check if you see the display not working at all.

  • Check if the power cord is connected to the socket. Without this the unit will not turn on. Also, if the socket has a switch, check if the switch is turned on.
  • If the power cord is connected, then check if there is power supply available at that plug point. Sometimes the point itself may be defective.
  • Once you are certain that it is not an external problem, but a microwave internal issue then start that the fuse first. The Sharp microwave has a temperature fuse and a monitor fuse, either of them may have blown out. Refer to the manual and locate the two fuses. If any or either is blown, then replace them and display should work fine.
  • If fuse is fine, check if there is a open or short wiring somewhere and take corrective action accordingly.
  • If the problem is not with the entire display, but just some digits, it could be due to soldering problem or faulty capacitor. Try to fix the soldered joints or replace the capacitor. This should solve this problem.
  • If it is none of these, it could be a control unit failure or defective foil pattern on the printed wiring board. But thee are more complex issues and you would need to take the unit to service center to get it tested and repaired.

How to Replace Sharp Microwave Turntable Coupler?

Microwave turntable assembly is the system that holds the turn table support. It consists of a coupler and a motor that turns the turntable through the table support.

Typical problems you would face with this system are when the coupler doesn’t turn with heavier vessels placed in the microwave. You would either see that the dish doesn’t turn at all.

Alternately, you will see irregular turns with possible clicking sound. This happens when the coupler is not fitting into the turntable support unit properly.

The best solution is to replace the coupler or the support unit. The turntable couplers are easy to replace in most Sharp models. If you try to take them out with a screwdriver, you should be able to snap them out.

The new one can also be snapped in simply by placing it in the right slot and pressing it. The couplers are one of the few parts that can be replaced without opening the cover of the microwave and can be done safely.

  • Replace the bulb with the new one.
  • Close the bulb cover and screw it back.
  • Close the microwave cover and close it back.

Here are the steps:

  • Turn off the microwave switch and plug out the power cord.
  • Pull the door out to open the microwave and block the door.
  • Wait for about a minute to let the capacitor discharge, so that it is safe to work on the microwave.
  • The Sharp doors have a louver at the top for exhaust. This can be removed by pressing the tabs on both the ends.
  • Now using a knife of about 0.5mm thickness, try to free the choke cover from the door stopper. For this you need to insert the knife in between the cover and the door assembly and push the knife outward.
  • Once you do it all along the choke, the door stopper can be lifted up to separate it from the door itself.
  • Now lift up the door hinges to free the door from the microwave. You have successfully removed the Sharp microwave Door.
